About Our Author and Reviewer
This guide has been written by Furty, who has an illustrious history in the World of Warcraft raiding scene and race for World First. He has been a member of guilds such as Serenity, Midwinter, and many more, and is currently raiding in Future. He plays most classes at the highest level. You can follow him on Twitter and watch him play on Twitch.
This guide has been reviewed and approved by Perfecto, an Outlaw/Assassination Rogue who raids in Method.
1. Tier 20 Set Bonuses
The Tier 20 set bonus for Outlaw provides additional damage by granting
passive buffs to your character through the use of your main rotational
abilities. Your
Opportunity procs and
Adrenaline Rush
are the beneficiaries of this tier set, improving their potency at no
cost to the player.
- 2-piece bonus: Free
Pistol Shots increase your Critical Strike
chance by 5% for 8 seconds. - 4-piece bonus:
Adrenaline Rush persists for 8 seconds longer
when it ends, at half power.
The 4-piece bonus in particular is noteworthy as it can greatly enhance your damage in certain situations, especially during sustained cleave and AoE. The 2-piece bonus, on the other hand, grants 2000 free Critical Strike rating when active, and you will be able to keep near full uptime on this buff in most situations. While this may seem powerful at first glance, it is worth noting Critical Strike is not one of our strongest stats and this bonus is not as good as it might otherwise seem. That said, both bonuses are worth acquiring. The 4-piece bonus is worth using even at the expense of slightly higher item level offpieces. The 2-piece bonus is not worth using over well itemized high item level offpieces until the 4-piece can be completed.
In comparison to the Tier 19 set bonuses, the Tier 20 bonuses are somewhat lackluster. This means if you are currently using Tier 19, you should prefer this set bonus until you are able to acquire Tier 20 that is roughly 5-10 item levels higher.
2. Best in Slot List
With the existence of Titanforged and Mythic+ dungeons, there is no such thing as a hard Best in Slot anymore. This is more of a guideline for the best pieces to keep an eye out for in your raid or dungeon (if applicable). Be smart, and if you find higher item level pieces with valuable stat combinations do not hesitate to upgrade to them.
| Slot | Item | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Helm | Demonic Inquisition | |
| Neck | Demonic Inquisition | |
| Shoulders | Fallen Avatar | |
| Chest | Mistress Sassz'ine | |
| Cloak | The Desolate Host | |
| Wrists | Fallen Avatar | |
| Gloves | Harjatan | |
| Belt | Kil'jaeden | |
| Legs | Demonic Inquisition | |
| Boots | Harjatan | |
| Ring #1 | Kil'jaeden | |
| Ring #2 | Maiden of Vigilance | |
| Trinket #1 | Grand Magistrix Elisande | |
| Trinket #2 | Kil'jaeden |
2.1. Trinket List
Assuming equal item levels:
Convergence of Fates
Specter of Betrayal
Nightblooming Frond (inconsistent)
Vial of Ceaseless Toxins
Bloodthirsty Instinct
Eye of Guarm (Versatility) or any equivalent stat stick
Engine of Eradication
Eye of Guarm (Haste) or any equivalent stat stick
Arcanogolem Digit
Entwined Elemental Foci
3. Evaluating Upgrades Using Stat Weights
You can evaluate upgrades side by side using a simple napkin math formula:
For example, using the stat weights from our Stats page, a pair of boots with 380 Mastery, 1150 Haste, and 976 Agility, we can calculate a DPS value of:
This does not give an exact DPS value, but can be used to calculate the relative value versus another piece. For example, if we have a second pair of boots with 450 Haste, 970 Versatility, and 976 Agility, we can compute the DPS value for that second item using the same formula, before comparing the results:
We can clearly see that 1865.8 > 1744.7, and therefore, the second pair of boots are the stronger upgrade. This is the quickest, best, and most reliable way of determining whether or not you should use one upgrade or another, despite the fact that stats weights are very approximate and change with respect to fight type, fight length, and the values of your other stats (synergetic scaling).
4. Racial Bonuses
Racial benefit is pretty minimal for Outlaw so it is recommended you just play whatever makes you happiest.
5. Legendaries
The best combination of legendary items for most raid encounters is
currently
Mantle of the Master Assassin +
Greenskin's Waterlogged Wristcuffs.
Greenskin's Waterlogged Wristcuffs gives
Between the Eyes a 20%
chance per Combo Point invested to increase the damage of the next
Pistol Shot by 200%. This is the best legendary for single target. The
proc should be paired with a
Blunderbuss proc whenever
possible.
Mantle of the Master Assassin grants 100% increased Critical Strike
while in
Stealth, and for 6 seconds after breaking
Stealth.
This is the second best legendary for Outlaw, currently, as the
Vanish
cooldown is reduced by
True Bearing. It allows for exceptional
burst and is a potent item in any situation.
The Curse of Restlessness causes
Restless Blades to also
reduce the cooldown of
Curse of the Dreadblades by 0.25 seconds
per Combo Point spent. Middling value legendary; consistent and stable damage
increase but not as potent as the stronger choices.
Soul of the Shadowblade grants the
Vigor talent. Currently
a very weak choice as Vigor is already a very weak talent for Outlaw and
does not provide much additional gain.
Insignia of Ravenholdt adds shadow cleave to all targets up to 15
yards in front of you when you use abilities that generate combo points.
This is third in priority for single target damage. It is also a strong
legendary for Mythic+ and sustained AoE.
Shivarran Symmetry causes melee attacks to strike nearby enemies for
65% of normal damage for 3 seconds after activating
Blade Flurry. This
is an ideal legendary for Mythic+ dungeon grinding. The goal is to bank a bunch
of burst damage in advance before activating
Blade Flurry. When you
activate
Blade Flurry, cast a 6 Combo Point
Run Through, then
cast
Marked for Death and
Run Through. When you are opening on a
pack you should leave
Blade Flurry off until you are at 4 Combo Points,
then activate
Blade Flurry and
Saber Slash into the
Run Through &
Marked for Death combo.
Thraxi's Tricksy Treads gives bonus damage equal to 20% of your
increased movement speed. This legendary can give decent damage when paired
with
Hit and Run and any gear with extra Speed affixes. You can also use
your
Sprint as a pseudo DPS cooldown for extra damage. Weak legendary
overall.
Will of Valeera gives
Feint a healing effect. This can be
useful on fights with exceptionally high damage intake or encounters that are
very unfriendly to melee classes. This should be paired with
Elusiveness for maximum defensive impact.
Cinidaria, the Symbiote causes your attacks to deal 30% extra physical
damage when your targets are above 90% health. This legendary is exceptional in
situations where an early damage check is paramount and amounts to a large
overall DPS increase. Unfortunately it does not have much use if damage early in
the fight is not important. Fourth best for single target.
Kil'jaeden's Burning Wish is an underwhelming legendary, as it takes
up a valuable trinket slot and has very low impact for sustained damage. It
could be useful if there are a horde of stacked adds, but is otherwise
lacklustre in every way.
6. Loot Competition
Regarding the loot you will get from raid or dungeon bosses, you will compete with other classes in the following cases:
| Item Type | Competing Classes |
|---|---|
| Tier Tokens | Death Knights, Druids, Mages, and Assassination/Combat/Subtlety Rogues |
| Leather Armor | Demon Hunters, Druids, Monks, and Assassination/Combat/Subtlety Rogues |
|
Everyone |
| Trinkets | Havoc Demon Hunters, Feral Druids, Windwalker Monks, Hunters, Assassination/Combat/Subtlety Rogues, and Enhancement Shamans |
